An Open Letter to Terrible People

As I mentioned in Monday's post, Saturday was the celebration of life for my dad. It was held on the patio of the Mexican restaurant in our hometown. My dad lived his whole life in that small town. He knew mostly everyone and vice versa. Not a lot of bad things happen there.

So you can imagine my surprise when my mom sent a group text to me and my siblings saying that the speaker she had rented for us to give our speeches had been stolen. And that meant she was on the hook for $4,500.

The security camera footage showed two men knock the camera upwards so they wouldn't be recorded, and then it just showed their backs as they walked off with the speaker (the large speaker on a tripod). Eventually, they figured out exactly which employees of the restaurant did it, but we have to retrieve the speaker so my mom can return it or else the $4,500 is outstanding. If it can't be found...I think the terrible human beings and/or the restaurant should pay it.

There were over 150 people there to celebrate my dad. There were three full picture boards showing him being silly, and doing the job he loved, and being a great husband and father. There were articles from the newspaper about him. There were birdhouses on the table that he made to keep himself busy after he retired. At one point, I looked over and saw two employees looking at the picture boards and thought to myself how nice that was.

And now I'm just thinking if either of those guys were involved in this, they have no soul. How can you look at those pictures and hear our speeches and then steal from us?! Even if they hadn't looked at the pictures or heard the speeches, what kind of person does that?

I'm wishing a lot worse on these people than stepping in dog poop, is all I have to say.

  1. How horrible! I'm so sorry to hear that and hope the people who did it get caught. I'm glad you were able to celebrate the life of your father. Sounds like he was a good man.

  2. This makes my heart ache!!! You know how I feel about this and well, you know what they say about karma!! Those jerks will get what they deserve someday and yes, the restaurant should pay it. I am just happy so many people came out to honor your dad, so special despite those heartless souls.

  3. Grrr. People are unreal. Seriously. Theft and abuse make me SO mad because thieves are lazy, unthoughtful douchebags who actually believe stealing from someone who has EARNED IT (or paid for it or whatever) is ok. That makes me SO angry. (Abuse is on my list for obvious reason. Ha.) I really hope you get the speaker back OR you take those bastards for all their worth.

  4. Ugh I'm sorry to hear that! People can be so heartless sometimes and that is not something your mom (or the rest of you) needs added to her plate :-/

  5. Wow, I'm so sorry that happened. Why do some people only have their own selfish desires at heart?! In other news, I love that you held his celebration of life at a Mexican restaurant. That sounds perfect!

  6. I just dont get people that think like that. Taking others people stuff. You didnt buy it & you think you can just take things???? I want to say a lot about these people too & it doesnt even involve me. UGGHGHHHH - my blood boils for you all. That's the last thing you want to deal with when emotions are already so heightened.

  9. Why are people so terrible in this world? It really makes me so mad, and then really sad for the world that we live in. I hope that they'll be able to retrieve the speaker for your mom, but hopefully you can hang onto the good memories from that day as you remembered your dad!

  10. I'm so sorry you guys are having to deal with that! It really makes you wonder how someone can be such a miserable person that they would steal. So thankful there was the footage and you guys definitely should not have to pay- especially if they know who did it!

  15. I can't believe people just outright steal things.... especially at an event like that! People are just UNREAL, but I believe in karma and karma will take care of them. I hope that didn't ruin the celebration of life.

  16. The guys have been identified? Will there be charges? $4500 is a significant theft amount...they need a criminal record. Assholes.
The celebration of life event itself sounds beautiful to a man and a family that deserves the honor.

  19. It’s astonishing the nerve of some people—how do they live with themselves??? Ugh. I’m glad the individuals were caught, and I really hope the speaker was retrieved so your mom could return it. This story makes my heart ache, that is so unfair—and especially that it was during the time to celebrate your dad. I’m so sorry, Mattie. Let us know how it worked out.

  20. That is effing horrible!! I'm so sorry!! The man mowing my step-grandmother's house stole her jewelry from my late grandfather over the weekend, so I am not happy about most people at the moment. Again, I am so sorry. What horrible, evil people!!

  21. What is wrong with people?!?!?! I don't understand how people can steal from anyone but especially not in a situation like this. It sounds like the evening was great anyways and I really hope you guys are able to recover the speaker or that the restaurant steps up since they are the ones with the criminal employees. When you set up at a place like that, you expect to trust that the restaurant is watching out for you and your stuff.

  22. Ughhh that just makes me so so sick. I'm so sorry it was stolen. And by step in dog poop you mean they can waltz right in front of a bus, right? ;) Too mean? Haha anyway, I'm so sorry. What a wonderful time together celebrating your dad's life! :) Also I've been the WORST at blog commenting but I've been loving your posts!!
