Things Blogging Has Taught Me

I've been a little bit extremely negative this week, so I thought I'd post something more lighthearted today. I've had this drafted for a while, but I wanted to think of more witty things to say. Spoiler alert: I didn't.

Not every blogger or Instagrammer lives in a spotless house with only pristine white or marble surfaces. (They use foam board and contact paper for that.)

But most of them do have a white fur rug or blanket for photo ops. What, like you don't?!

If you include the words 'an announcement' in your post title, your post will get allll the traffic. (I have two posts with 'an announcement' in the title and they definitely have inflated views...probably because people think I'm pregnant.)

Donuts are the new cupcake. Even 100% clean eating bloggers will post pictures of donuts, because...donuts. They may even own a donut shirt, or donut socks, or donut pajamas (I'm not hating--Rachel posted a pair of donut pajamas a while back and I really wanted them). But I promise you, if you put a donut in front of me I may be able to take the time to take a picture of it first, but that thing is definitely getting devoured.

'MOPS' is not just a group of women who really, really, like to mop. (I had to Google this after seeing it on a few blogs.)

Staged blogging pictures are pretty, but ridiculous. And yet I still try my hand at them (and fail).
My sister and her boyfriend got us a tray for these giant ice cubes for Christmas. Perfect for cocktails since they don't melt as fast. Also, penguin socks. I wear seasonal socks year-round with no shame.
I really like Kate Spade and my family has caught on so Christmas was good to me this year (on both sides!).
My sister-in-law got me this super cute glass box for Christmas and I use it for my Kate Spade earrings.
Clearly this mug is blog-worthy in my opinion. Also pictured is my first (and last) attempt at wearing white pants in the winter. I just can't pull it off like every single other blogger on the planet can.
I might as well have just called this 'pictures of mugs.' Also, you know how we're our own harshest critics, so a lot of times we may not like a picture of ourselves (I know at least someone can relate to this)? Is it weird that I think that about pictures of me holding things? "Ugh, my hand looks so bad in this picture." Like for real? It's a hand. Maybe if my nails were painted, which is far too much work, I wouldn't think my hands were so gross.
I have to say, I'm kind of proud of this one. Like I said, donuts are a blogger's best friend. And it helps that this donut shop has the best bags.
The credit for this one really has to go to Farmgirl Flowers for creating the prettiest bouquets + gift boxes, but I mean taking it out of the box and arranging it on the kitchen floor deserves some credit, right? RIGHT?!
Pictures of feet are timeless, didn't you hear?

What has blogging (or reading blogs) taught you?

  1. Hi! I'm Lauren from over at Post Grad in Progress! I've heard a lot about you from mutual blogger friends (mainly Kylie & Molly) so I decided I needed to stop by. And I have to say...AMEN. Sometimes looking at blogger's pictures is overwhelming. How do they get the perfect lighting? How does everything look so perfect? Sigh

    1. We talk about you because we like you, Mattie ;) I LOVE THAT STARBUCKS MUG! And taking pictures of my feet. I'm afraid of white pants in winter because #allthejudgment and as much as I would like to be on the donut train, I'm really not...but I do feel like people talk about (not really take pictures of) queso and I am ALL about some queso!!!

  2. i admit, i did donut nails once on my blog. i think because of the pink and the sprinkles that i'm drawn to them!! and i love anything marble. my phone case, my computer, and my background. it makes for such a clean design. i'm lucky i have a HUGE window that i use for my pics. i wish i had those pretty insta pics. i don't have time to stage stuff just for insta.

  3. So funny. I see everything as a picture for my blog. If Cocoa does something cute and I can not get a picture I get frustrated because I'm like I need to post this cute moment!! I like he real pictures though because its real life and everything does not have to be perfect to be awesome.

  4. Anytime I take a blogg-y picture that includes my hands I take a million trying to make them look better - its crazy! Also, my nail beds suck... bahahaha

I don't own a white rug or blanket and I feel like a total fail as a blogger! And YES to anything Kate Spade!! Obsessed

  5. Those flowers are soooo gorgeous, but your staging of everything is pretty spot on too ;) and omgg I do the same thing being critical of my hands in pictures (usually also of mugs)-- so annoying.

  6. Hahaha, I am AWFUL at picture taking. Like, how do I not get my shadow in the pic?? Do I need a selfie stick? I don't own a white rug (because my dogs would turn it grey).... do I need to get one?? Hahahaha! I love reading your blog & scrolling through your pics! I don't think you're failing at anything!

  7. OMG. Yes that mug is photo worthy!!!! Leopard print and Starbucks? I'm sold. I don't post donut pictures but...#glutenintolerance so that's my excuse. But I have alllllllll the coffee pictures. You have to like coffee if you blog. You just have to.

  8. So true. I was just thinking the other day that I need to get me one of those marble surfaces…not for blog photos more so that I actually have enough $$$ to buy anything with marble on it. I'm not a fan of the overly staged photos either-it makes people feel bad. And I dislike when people still photos from the internet for the majority of their posts and claim them as there own

  9. I am so horrible at staging photos...
Its funny - I have all sorts of white fuzzy blankets for baby sessions & never thought to use them for blog pictures :) haha #onetrackmind

  10. Haha this is great! I am awful at staging photos, I don't even bother! Once it looks semi non blurry, I call it a day lol

  11. hahaha preach girl, peach! We are all guilty of at least ONE of these! And I literally always think "I should paint my nails before we take outfit pics" and then I'm like "or i can spend that time doing like 100 other things!" and then pick the second option. Also I totally googles MOPS, I haven't even heard of that yet! I gotta get with the program cause I will be a "mop" in a few years haha (It means mothers of preschoolers right? That's all I could find!) Anyways, this post was pretty funny and I am totally guilty of some of these things!! #bloggerlife :)

  12. hahah, I liked pictures of feet long before the internet, I swear! Even with my disposable camera :) Good list and I never gave thought to that about donuts and cupcakes, you just might be right. I agree that contrived images are dumb but honestly, as someone who loves aesthetics, they are very pretty! And you know I love that Oregon mug :)

Hope your week has picked-up! On the downward slope now!

  13. I was never one to turn down a donut...or a cookie. I am waiting for cookies to have the spotlight next. And I do own quite a bit of instagram worthy mugs...but most of them were purchased before Instgram was a thing for me.

  14. bahahaha i had to google MOPS. wtf. also, i can't remember the last time i had a doughnut. i like krispy kreme, but doughy doughnuts are not my jam. does that make sense? but when i do eat doughnuts, i rarely take photos because um, i'm eating the doughnut.
i think the same about my hands. it's weird. why do we do that?
i try and make my pictures look 'pretty' but in general, they don't even come close to the pretty instagrammers who have the selfies down to a perfect science and everything they own is white, couches, walls, pants.. i don't own white pants. not gonna happen lol.

  15. I just had to look up MOPS too, haha! Beautiful (i.e. white and marble background) blog pictures are nice to look at, but "real" blogs like yours are the ones I actually want to read! I want to see people who have wacky lives like mine! I can't NOT acknowledge the ridiculousness of my own life/photos (like chasing the light around my backyard to get two decent shots!) and I really appreciate other people who do the same. PS I want all of your mugs now! :)

  16. Haha! I love this post! I feel the same way about my hands. Like, the only time I notice my nail is chipped is if I take a picture for my blog. I feel like I've learned that blogger is basically synonymous with photographer, which I am not. I recently put my camera in manual mode for like 5 minutes, took two terrible pictures, and walked away. Hopefully I'll learn some day!

  17. Wait there's not a group I can join for women who really like to mop??? What a let down. I just googled it and the first item was in fact a mop. But then I realized it was Mothers of Preschoolers. So I guess soon enough I will be a mop hahaha.

Do you remember my house tour? Yeah for each picture stuff was moved out of the way to take the picture and then moved back so we could move to the next room...we don't live in such a pristine clean house, well soon we will when we're showing haha, but in real life...our house is a hot mess.

Donut say that donuts are the new cupcake! Get it? what a horrible pun haha. I love both!

And I really love that KS glass box, I'd use that for all my jewelry since I have very little jewelry that I dont' wear haha and the mugs, those are awesome!

  18. It's so funny how much we edit pictures to make everything so much prettier! There's been a few times where I've taken a picture in hopes of Instagramming it later, only to realize that I don't like the lighting or the way my hand looks!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hahaha, I totally judge my hands in pictures too.

You absolutely deserve some credit for the photo with the floral bouquet. The flowers are obviously gorgeous, but it's one of my favourite flat lay photos you've done by far.

  20. Yeah I totally had to google MOPS, too! haha. I love that Starbucks mug. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. All these are so true...now I am going to go look up MOPS because I have no clue what that means.

    ReplyDelete
  22. These are all so true. And I often look at staged photos and think that is pretty but seriously so dumb. No one wears their shoes in a white bed with coffee. Nope. That Starbucks mug is so awesome. I love reading these behind the photos.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Love all of these! Doughnuts are definitely the new cupcake!

    ReplyDelete
  24. So I 100% need that leopard Starbucks mug!! Nothing cuter!

  25. There's this whole Instagram feed called I have this thing wth floors, it's just feet and floors. I love it. As for blogging, pretty pictures are really key for a successful blog. I admit I haven't used my dslr in a while, the iPhone camera is so good with a post-photo editing program.

    ReplyDelete
  26. So, I bought a white poster board to use for pictures after I started reading blogs. Sometimes having a white background just looks so much better than the carpet or our counters. But, I do like seeing blogs that use "real" life pictures! I've been seeing all of this on other blogs & Instagram. Just feet, hands & doughnuts, haha!

    ReplyDelete
  27. This post reinforces my belief that I am a bad blogger. I do not own any kind of white background for pictures, I do not know what MOPS is, I do not drink coffee (therefore I have no pic of Starbucks), and I don't think I've ever taken pictures of donuts. hahahahaa!

  28. I had to look up MOPS, and am surprised it's a "thing" though with so many mommy bloggers out there, I guess I shouldn't be?! I just got Blue freezable, reusable whiskey stones for Christmas and we've been using them in ALL the cocktails! And yes to the ridiculousness of staged pics- I so don't have time for all that! I'm more of a "click and post" type of blogger :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't even like doughnuts but all the pics make me think I should. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. So true about "announcement" posts!

I totally wear seasonal socks year round too! No shame, girl! :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. That glass box is super pretty! I don't have any one thing to store my jewelry in at the moment (partially because I have a bit too much costume jewelry - all those chunky statement necklaces I used to wear more often take up a lot of space) so everything is tucked away in different places in and around my dresser.

    That bouquet is beautiful!
