Confessions [11.25.15]

On Monday, I went into the restroom at work and headed for the first stall. Then I saw this horrifying giant moth and I freaked out and went down to the farthest stall because no way was I going in there with that thing. Then right as I sat down it flew into my stall! How did it know?! I swear it was bloodthirsty. And, well, there's not much you can do when you are (ahem) tinkling... So I just stayed as still as possible...but the dang thing started flying around and I seriously shrieked and flailed my arms like crazy. It disappeared and I checked everywhere on myself in the mirror on my way out and thankfully it was not on me. And I had an anxious feeling and elevated heart rate for at least five minutes after that horrific experience. #killermoth #leavemealone

I am so sick of companies emailing with "exciting post ideas" or "opportunities" or whatever they want to call them...and then pitching me this idea where I get nothing out of it! I mean, I've only ever done one post in exchange for any sort of compensation, and that was when eShakti gave me a customized piece of my choosing for free (no monetary compensation or anything) in exchange for a review. And I'd be fine if I never do a sponsored post again. BUT I feel like it takes a lot of nerve to email these post ideas that are absolutely straight up advertising for these companies and so clearly benefit them, and then not give me anything while they are gaining something. Newsflash: I can come up with my own posts, don't act like you're doing me a favor by giving me a post idea...that just so happens to promote your company. #seriously? #rantover

I have had the idea of dying my hair red (well, at least redder) since May. I told myself I was going to chop my hair off and have it colored after the wedding. I have yet to make the appointment because talking on the phone/making appointments freaks me out (even though the girl I'm going to make the appointment with is a family friend, used to babysit me, and came to our wedding...). That's #hairconfessionpart1. #phoneanxiety #maybemymomshouldcallforme

#Hairconfessionpart2 is that I keep going back and forth on the coloring my hair thing. There's this sweater I like, and it's a rust color. But I don't know if I should get it because I feel like I'll look like a big orange blob if I color my hair. But then again...what if I don't color it?! Ugh. Someone make my hair coloring/sweater purchasing decisions for me, please and thank you. #indecisive #tocolorornottocolor

Do you ever write a post and then everyone comments on one little thing that you thought was just the tiniest part of the post (and didn't even add in for comments on it)? Or maybe you wrote a post with a bunch of different things in it and nobody comments on the part you thought was the funniest/most interesting/etc? Sometimes this happens to me and I'm like...what is going on?! #that'sthelamestdetailinthepost #notwhatIwasgoingfor #toeachtheirownIguess

I know I've mentioned before how I push the envelope when it comes to work clothes. (I'll wear a t-shirt and throw on a sweater or fancy necklace and hope no one calls me out, I wore a denim jacket before I knew if it was allowed on non-casual days...) Well, I got to the Portland office and the sales reps always wear suits, of course, for meetings with clients. But I noticed that the sales assistant wore jeans. I stuck with dressing up for two days and then on Thursday I switched to jeans. Yesterday my boss sent an email to everyone letting them know today is casual Wednesday (since it's the last work day this week) and I felt a tiny bit guilty. But it's really the owners and CFO that are traditional and set that dress code (even casual Friday was hard for them to approve) and they're in Seattle. #rebel #jeansforpresident

My last confession is that I have decided to take a blogging hiatus for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving! And if you're in Canada (or anywhere else outside the U.S.)...then I hope you have a great Thursday! ;) #happythanksgiving #pulloutthestretchypants

  2. OMG your moth story!! I would have died. Haha #thosethingsarecreepy

  3. LOL Yes I sometimes wonder why everyone comments on certain details too. Sometimes I think I make a really funny joke and no one gets it lol. Oh well, just glad I have friends who comment in the first place! And for real girl, about the companies emailing about products or post ideas or what not. I said yes to something like two weeks ago because it was a cool company, but I had to email him back that there was a "disconnect" because I had never even tried their product (was waiting for them to offer lol) and therefore I could not write honestly or passionately about it. I even said this - "I would rather write about my dog." Hahaha. I meant that in a nice way of course, but like come on. I don't even know if I would accept money to write about something I have never tried, but I'm all for "exchanging" things if I truly think it's cool.

  4. I've been getting a lot of weird promo things too for the blog & I'm like go away...

I always find it funny when I have a lot of info on my blog & it seems like EVERYONE comments about one little thing in there. I guess certain things stand out more then others

  5. i had a similar experience to your moth one 2 weeks ago! i was walking outside during my lunch break and there was a spider's web attached to me WITH A SPIDER IN IT! i tried to get away but since it was attached to me it kept following me lol so i was flailing my arms and yelling "don't get one me please!" in front of a restaurant that had people eating outside hahaha so at least they got a show with their lunch!
and then i practically ran to the public bathroom and stripped my clothes off in the stall to make sure it wasn't on me or my clothes! i never found it again though!

  6. Moths freak me out more than spiders do! I would have panicked! I hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

  7. I feel the same about the e-mails with blog post ideas. I typically reply to the first email and ask for more information but when the reply back and make it very clear that they just want me to write 10 things I've learned about work and plug their website I'm out. What really drives me nuts is that most of the time the companies are based in the US so I can't even use their services!

  8. Re: the rust sweater, welcome to the redhead struggle #itsreal. I don't feel like I can ever wear red/orange clothes, although I don't love those colors anyway, so it's not a huge loss for me, haha. Clearly you should dye your hair because you're already in the redhead mindset! ;) And I'm always fascinated to see what things people comment on, especially in my 5 for Friday posts when it's basically 5 super random topics! I'm pretty much secondhand hyperventilating over your moth story, btw... HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

  9. I hate those emails too! Most of them time they're something I would never post either and it doesn't even fit the audience that reads my blog so I don't get why they are even emailing me.

  10. bahahaha the thing with the posts / comments. yes. that happens a lot. i have a small theory about it, but i don't want to put it here. and ugh the companies emailing.. i just ignore them. whatever. i say colour your hair, why not! my bestie is my hair stylist and i don't even like calling her to set up an appointment haha so i feel you there!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Um, those emails?! SO annoying!! Do you even respond to them? I ignore them. The first few I felt bad for ignoring, and now I'm like WHATEVER.

Go for the hair change! Red are SO pretty! My sister chopped off her hair and has had it different reds for about a year now and I love it.

Also...I only make appointments with hair places where I can schedule online...ha!

  12. Everyone I've ever dated always made me make the phone calls- restaurant reservations, appointments, even just ordering food in (no longer an issue- thanks GrubHub!), you name it! I never understood it!

I just received an email yesterday from Warby Parker and was SO excited... until I read it and realized they weren't even offering anything. Get outta here with that nonsense!

And YES to the one thing people notice/don't comment on thing- I wrote a weekend post a few weeks ago and every comment was about the grocery store scanner things- I was like, seriously?! Hahaha, have a great thanksgiving!

  13. ew bugs - i can't stand them. the other day when i was in the washroom changing at the gym, i turned around and a huge bug (i think it was a Silverfish) was just chillin' on the wall. i shrieked and ran out half naked (in my sports bra and pants) and made one of the other members go kill it. being half naked in front of the gym members was way better than that thing that was hungry for human meat.

    thanks for linking up!

  14. I have gotten a few emails about random sponsored posts too and even though they are kind of relevant to stuff I write about...I'm just like....why? For what? My readers will know I'm pushing a product and I don't even care about it! Haha I totally get where you are coming from! My work dress code is SO relaxed. I could probably wear jeans every day and no one would say anything. But I usually dress up at least 3 days a week;) Happy Thanksgiving Mattie! <3

  15. How do I not follow your blog?! Anyway, I love ALL your confessions. The moth thing? I'd have been done. Like, send me home because I need to shower. And I totally push the boundaries on dress code, too, but it's a little different because we're a small business and everyone seems to go with jeans when they run out of good clothes. (Batman tee and a blazer? I've done that.) I feel like all my HILARIOUS cool blog posts go without comments and my weird last minute ones blow up... but that's ok because I go back and reread my hilarious posts and laugh at myself. (#I'mHilarious) Ok, that's it for now. I follow your blog now :) Happy Thanksgiving!

  16. Yay for taking a holiday blogging break, you deserve it after finding the perfect gifs for this confessions post. OK, you started the post with the killer moth so I'm going to assume that's where you want me to comment ;) That sounds terrifying and I'm impressed that toilet accuracy was still 100% after the flailing. Are men able to do that? No way! I haven't tried to schedule a hair appointment since the move, mainly for the fear of calling a salon and not knowing how to speak hair like I used to with my trusted stylist back home. lady problems.

  17. Eek on the moth story! I totally get what you mean on those emails from companies. I especially love the ones that say "write this post promoting us, and we might pick the best ones to promote on social media!" Wow, what a huge incentive. lol. Happy Thanksgiving! :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. K I keep getting those emails, too! They have this 'great' post idea and want me to post it haha unless I REALLY love your company and you give me something for your post, it ain't happenin. I feel ya! And YES to the random comments on a post thing. Sometimes I wonder if people just read a few comments and base theirs off of that haha like they don't read my post, just a comment to get an idea of the post, I dunno! I think I will be taking a little week hiatus, too :) because I need to focus at spending a million dollars on black Friday haha. Have you ever gone red before? I bet you would look so cute!! And you can always dye it back!! Might as well try it and if you hate it, at least you know you don't want to do it again!
    Happy Thanksgiving almost!

  19. fave hashtag = #that'sthelamestdetailinthepost

You've been to Australia, so you know that the critters here can be ginormous. I feel you on moth fear. I have it regularly.

Color the hair, girl! It's just hair. You can color it again in just a couple of months. (I'm not sure I'm the best advice giver on this topic since I'm currently sporting a hair color some would avoid like the plague.)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would have done the exact same thing if a moth got anywhere near me! I really think they like to follow people, haha. I think you should totally dye your hair red! I'm a little partial though, I guess. Haha. The only bad thing about red is that is doesn't last very long whether it's permanent or not. :( I've had a few emails from companies like that & I typically just ignore them or say I'm not interested. It's kind of irritating but then again, they might not be the right companies to work with in the first place! Have a great weekend & happy Thanksgiving!

  21. I always get the emails about "boosting your SEO rankings". Weird. And I think it's so funny when I post different things and the one I want people to comment on never is that one haha

  22. with regard to the commenting thing... a) i'm bad about not commenting; it's incredibly rare that i bother, which could be why i hardly ever get comments on my own blog, so i'll tell myself, "do better about this, jenn," and i'll have spurts of "activity", which are short-lived; b) like the other day when i'd left the comment about how that sandwich looked delicious... i wanted you to know that i'd actually read the post by leaving a comment, and the thing that most appealed to me about the post was that sandwich (maybe i was just hungry, but it looked really good; that's what spoke to me... i wish kind of wishing i could get something like that here... and i probably could if i bothered to look, but i'm a creature of habit; c) this post has double-digits in comments; the last time a post of mine had double-digit comments was may eighth... six months ago. i certainly don't want this to sound callous, and i understand that it will, but... who cares what people are saying? they're saying stuff. they're interacting. i think that's awesome.

  23. heck no--i freak out with any flying insect. i swear i attract them too, lol. i can't stand it when ppl just comment on one thing--i think they are just copying what the person before them said. it sucks. or they comment only on the Extra Elle stuff.

  24. Haha these gifs are on point. I say go for the hair change!!! I have long hair and have been wanting to get it cut since I got married. I just have to bite the bullet and make an appointment! Also, hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving:)

  25. Your paragraph about pushing the boundaries at work made me laugh! My old job was at a community center. The dress code was SUPER casual. We had to wear work polos, shorts or skirts that hit at the knee or pants, and closed toed shoes. After working there for about a year, I started not wearing the polos once in awhile, subbing sneakers for sandals when I was working nights (no boss around). Little things like that. Then when I was transferred to an office position instead of customer service, I didn't have to wear the polos anymore and just had to wear anything knee-length, covered shoulders, and closed-toe flat shoes. Well since I worked nights when I rarely saw my boss, I'd wear dresses that were a little above the knee, take my cardigan off in my office, heeled boots and wedges, and lots of sandals in the summer. Way to push the limit girl!

  26. I have a love hate relationship with hair dye. I mean basically I love it and I always say go for it but then you run into issues like the fact that half of my head is almost black in the top of my head is almost blonde and no matter what I do I can't seem to stop it so now I have to let the dark part grow out. So basically I'm saying go ahead and do it but be very careful with the color you pick and make sure you leave it on for the time it says and not longer like I accidentally did :D I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your new husband!

  27. I am a little late to the party - catching up on a bunch of old posts. I am such a baby when it comes to calling and making appointments as well. I always try to see if I can do it online first. :) I say keep your hair color the same...it looks so pretty already and I feel like once you start changing your hair color you have to deal with the upkeep and then you may never get your natural color back! (maybe a little dramatic...) Hope you had a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ughhhh bugs freak me out. Especially when I am in a small space with no where to go. I would shriek too!!! I say go for it with your hair! It is just a color and can always be changed if you don't like it!!!

As far as blog comments go, I feel like most of the time the first person who comments reads your entire post and then a lot of people end up reading that comment and going off that and not really reading your post. Maybe that is just my theory? I wear jeans to work all the time. I work in a pretty casual office and we sort of have unspoken dress codes. That are clearly lax.

  29. I hateeeee those emails! Especially the ones that are like "we have a great post suggestion for you!" Okay no. BYE.

  30. I am so with you on the companies wanting you to work for free. I have now started emailing them back like, "Love to work with you, my fee is____". Then they act all offended. Losers.
